The Korean peninsula is a very mountainous country, and for much of its history the regions of Korea developed independent cultures and societies. Three Kingdoms ruled in Korea between 57 BC and 668 AD. These 3 kingdoms fought savagely for control of the Korean Peninsula and that rivalry remains deep within the psyche of the Korean people.

Even today, this animosity continues. The regions of Gyeongsang and Jeolla in Southern Korea seem like different countries. The governing elite seem to come mostly from Gyeongsang, ensuring that that region receives the bulk of government development money. Jeolla has remained mostly ruralized with the population of this region being disaffected by the obvious regional bias. Even with new highways between these two regions, travel between them is almost non-existent, and inter-regional marriage is VERY rare. This was the inspiration behind the signs - the cultural gap seen in the "There She Is" series!
